Wellness check on sleeping man leads to drug bust in Punta Gorda

PUNTA GORDA, Fla. — A man found asleep in his car has been arrested after police found drugs and a large sum of cash on him early Friday morning in Punta Gorda.

Just before 4:30 a.m., Punta Gorda police conducted a wellness check on the individual, identified as Jeremy Allen Jones of Port Charlotte, who was sleeping in his car in the parking lot of the Downtown Gatorz Bar And Grill.

Jones acted suspiciously and pulled a large amount of cash tied to rubber bands from the center console when police asked if he had identification.

A search of his car revealed a sports bag that blew an unknown powdery substance in an officer’s face when it was opened, according to PGPD. The officer was taken to the hospital for evaluation.

The bag contained 497 grams of methamphetamine and 133 grams of crack, packaged in individual bags for resale. Additionally, the bag contained over 65 grams of marijuana, four hydrocodone pills, an unknown brown powdery substance, an unknown multicolored substance, digital scales, cell phones and small plastic bags.

Police also found more than $7,600 in cash in small bills wrapped and separated by denomination in rubber bands.

Jones was arrested and transported to Charlotte County Jail.

He faces charges of trafficking methamphetamine, possession of cocaine with intent to sell, possession of a controlled substance without a prescription, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
