Southampton’s 5 most likely signings, ft ‘incredible’ Man City wonderkid

Goals have been rare for Southampton in pre-season. And after the Saints gave up in an uninspired 0-0 draw with Watford, head coach Ralph Hasenhuttl took comfort in stressing that the Saints at least had time on their side as they sought to add bite to an often toothless front line.

“Absolutely. (We’re) definitely looking for more,” the former RB Leipzig boss told Hampshire Live after being forced to deploy Stuart Armstrong at the forefront of his brutal attack.

So even after the £13million signing of Sekou Mara from Bordeaux, expect a few new faces to come through the door before the September deadline, even if Southampton are operating on a fraction of the budget enjoyed by many Premier League rivals.

Here are five of the most likely arrivals at St Mary’s this month.

Liam Delap – Manchester City

Manchester City have absolutely no intention of letting one of their most talented youngsters go on a permanent deal. A short-term loan, however, well, that can be a whole different story.

Armando Broja was a revelation on loan from Chelsea last season, leaving an unproven youngster and returning a £30m Premier League star. Broja’s rapid development on the south coast will not have gone unnoticed by other top-flight clubs with hungry youngsters in need of playing time.

And Delap, a 6ft1in number nine with 32 goals in 32 PL2 appearances for Man City, could do worse than look to Broja for inspiration.

According fabrice romano, Southampton made a £16million bid in July. A bit of recalibration is needed, but it’s still a deal that could be done.

Emmanuel Dennis–Watford

According to The Express, Southampton have already held talks with the Nigerian international’s representative. And while Dennis started Watford’s Championship opener last weekend, few expect him to still be around in September.

Tricky and direct, Dennis was one of the Premier League’s most underrated strikers in 2021/22. 10 goals and six assists is a more than honorable return. Certainly for a top-flight newcomer plying his trade for a club that would end the season in the relegation zone.

Dennis would also represent an immediate upgrade over Nathan Redmond and Moussa Djenepo.

Samuel Edozie – Manchester City

Tino Livramento arrived last summer without a single Premier League appearance on his CV. He ended the season as one of the stars of the division, amid very public praise from none other than England boss Gareth Southgate.

Reports from The Mail, saying Southampton could hijack Bayer Leverkusen’s £5million deal with Samuel Edozie, suggest Saints are looking to replicate Livramento’s success with another fresh-faced teenager concerned about the lack of opportunities in a behemoth of a club.

“He’s an amazing young player with good pace,” Guardiola said of Edozie last year, praising his goalscoring skills.

Alex Collado – Barcelona

A gifted and typically technical playmaker, Collado, 23, appears to be in a battle he cannot win. Not with Gavi, Pedri, Frenkie de Jong and many more ahead of him in the Barcelona pecking order.

According fabrice romano, the elegant and cultured Collado asked Xavi to let him go. Southampton are a long-time admirer, according to Gianluca di Marzio, and would benefit from the Spaniard going through the needle’s eye in the final third.

Marcus Pedersen – Feyenoord

Southampton’s reputation as a club that takes raw gemstones and turns them into high-quality diamonds certainly hasn’t gotten past Pedersen.

“I am a player who has never been afraid to take the extra step,” the Norway international said in July.

“Southampton have shown for years that they can develop young talent and sell them to bigger clubs.”

Raging right-back Pedersen insists he has yet to speak directly to the Saints, amid rumors of a move to England (The Athletic). But with Livramento still out after knee surgery – and with Kyle Walker-Peters excelling on the left – it’s a game to watch over the next three weeks or so.
