The legendary Urdu poet Kaifi Azmi founded an NGO, the Mijwan Welfare Society (MWS) in 1993. 28 years later, Kaifi Saab’s daughter, Shabana Azmi, continues the legacy. The Mijwan Welfare Society is working around the clock to carry out Covid relief efforts.
Said Shabana: “We are facilitating vaccination against COVID in remote villages. Facilitation here includes sharing information about COVID vaccination and breaking vaccination myths and rumors, supporting COVID vaccination registration on COWIN, advice and assistance on COVID vaccination centers, transport support for those who cannot afford or cannot move due to a physical movement problem or for the poor elderly, coordination with local health authorities for vaccination, follow-up with those who have received the first dose and then a booster for the second dose.
MWS also distributes dry rations to those who have lost their livelihoods or have difficulty securing food for their families. Shabana says: “We provide dry rations for 6 months to families who have lost their main livelihood. We also provide livelihood support by sharing information about local livelihood opportunities. We collect information about local jobs and share it with communities through our Rozgar Dhaba. “
In addition, MWS provides assistance and advice on creating or correcting documents such as Aadhaar card, pan card, bank account opening, ration card, labor card, which helps the community eligible to benefit from various government programs.
“We educate communities about the various government programs and programs related to COVID and help them apply for them. Distribution of sanitary napkins to women’s groups. Registering migrants in our Rozgar Dhaba, making three-layer cloth masks, it generates jobs for local artisans (especially women) and distributes them to communities. We have distributed nearly 100,000 cotton masks, ”Shabana informs.
The issue of mental health and post-pandemic trauma also occupies an important place. According to Shabana, “As far as mental health is concerned, of course this is a major issue. But our aim is to ensure the livelihood. So we are currently not directly engaged in mental health, but indirect support. to families through livelihood helps many families cope with COVID. challenges and those of survival. The challenge with us is that our work is in the remote villages of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar and the staff rarely wants to go and connecting virtually is not that efficient. “
Shabana sees a long struggle ahead. “It’s nothing. There is so much more to do. Every effort counts. Rather than talking about what has been done, we should all be there doing as much as we can,” Shabana concludes.
