Arsenal contact Barcelona midfielder’s camp over summer move – sources

Much has been made about Philippe Coutinho’s struggles at FC Barcelona and FC Bayern. But it looks like the playmaker has firmly returned to his best form since returning to the Premier League in January, joining Aston Villa on a short-term loan.

He was brought in to add the creative spark to Steven Gerrard’s team. Three months into Birmingham’s new spell, the Brazilian hasn’t missed a beat, racking up four goals and three assists in ten league appearances.

Coutinho’s blistering performances in the Premier League will no doubt force Aston Villa to make his move permanent this summer. But according to a report from Mundo Deportivo, they are set to face stiff competition from Arsenal.

The report adds that the Londoners have made contact with the player’s entourage, exploring the possibility of a potential move to Emirates next season.

Arsenal are big favorites to finish fourth in the Premier League this season. The prospect of playing in the Champions League next season could add weight to the club’s pursuit of Coutinho, perhaps even making them the favorites in the race.

The added exposure around Coutinho, thanks to his excellent performances in the Premier League, bodes well for Barcelona. The Catalans might be able to attract a bidding war this summer as the playmaker’s contract at Camp Nou only expires in 2023.

This could see Barca pocketing significant transfer revenue from the sale of the former Liverpool sensation, ultimately giving Xavi more room to work as the manager plans for next season.

Fabrizio Romano has already confirmed Barcelona’s capture of AC Milan midfielder Franck Kessie on a free transfer this summer. The Ivorian could be the first of many as the club prepare for a summer of change.

Coutinho, for his part, has chosen to remain tight-lipped about his future. There are no secrets about his desire to play in London but he is enjoying life in Birmingham so far and is eyeing a place in Brazil’s squad for the upcoming 2022 FIFA World Cup.
